Herbs and Supplements
There are many herbs and supplement that you can take to help with anxiety and depression. Herbs like St. John's Wart have been used for years and is considered by some people to be as effective as anti-depressants. Other herbs and supplements that can help are Valerian, Holy Basil, Chamomile, Fish Oil, B-Complex Vitamins ( One of my personal favorites) , and Vitamin D,
St John's wart is a herb commonly used for treating depressiona and also conditions that often accompany depression like anxiety, insomnia, and losss of appetite. It is often considered to be as effective in treating depressiona as many prescription drugs for treating mild depression. St. John's Wort can cause interactions with some drugs so it might not be a good choice for those on other medications.
Holy Basil is another herb tht is known for helping depression and anxiiety. Holy Basil has Vitamin-C and antioxidants that ca reduce stress by soothing the nerves and reducing inflamation.
Chamomile is a relaxing herb and can significantly decrease symptoms of anxiiety and depression. It can be taken in tea form, capsules or even used in aromatherapy.
Valerian Root. Due to its relaxing properties, valerian root is used to treat insomnia and anxiety. Valerian root can be taken as capsules containing root extract or as a tea..
Fish Oil/ Omega-3's and omega 6' are effective for treating depression and anxiety. Fish like salmon and sardines are good sources, but you can also find good supplements to take in capsule or liquid form.
Evening Primrose Oil has bee used medicinally for centuries. It is considered highly effective in treating anxiety disorders. It contains the nutrient 'gamma linoleic adid" which can stabilize hormone levels and improve nerve function.
B-Complex Vitamins. Vitamin B-12 and other B can help in producing brain chemicals that affect mood and other brain functions. Low levels of B-12 and other B vitamins like vitamin B-6 and folate have been linked to depression. I have always felt like B-Complex has helped with my anxiety and depression, but some people experience the opposite affect and notice an increase in anxiety and feel that it can cause panic attacks.
As with all supplements you should always do your research before taking a product. Don't rely on my opinion or anyone else's. Some supplements can react to drugs or may not be appropriate for people with certain medical conditions, so you should always check with your doctor or medical procticioner before starting supplements or mixing supplements with drugs.
